This morning, the Fine Arts CRAI Library held the presentation of the selected painting to illustrate Saint Georgeʼs Day 2019 at the UB. Chosen by the Commission of Culture at the Faculty of Fine Arts -among those submitted by the students-, the chosen painting was the one made by Jaime Yagüe Relimpio. During the presentation, Yagüe noted his creation is based inspired on Tintoretto: “For the poster I wanted to submit in this institutional contest, I went for a version of Tintorettoʼs Saint George and the Dragon”.

Abstraction marks the poster for the new edition of Saint Georgeʼs Day at the University of Barcelona.

The painting has been created using a mixed technique presenting an overlaying of signs as its canvas, and a pictorial creation with materials such as acrylic paint, pastels and grattage. According to Yagüe, the idea of getting inspiration from Tintoretto, the 16th century Italian painter, was the starting point to work on a new setting of the scene, focused on Saint Georgeʼs killing of the dragon and omitting the princess running away. With an abstract language, based on arks and gradients with contrasted colors, the author wanted to show the physical elements of the scene but with a new reading which allows different interpretations.

Jaime Yagüe Relimpio (Barcelona, 2000) began his artistic career when he studied arts in high school and conducted an individual photography exhibition, titled “Madrid en Químic”. He began his studies on Fine Arts at the Facult of Barcelona in 2018, and is working on his own paintings at the same time.

The UB, once more, is presenting a poster that will shock everyone. Apart from the book and the rose we all think about when mentioning this day, the students of Fine Arts always bring new ideas for Saint Georgeʼs Day thanks to this contest: new techniques and interpretations.

The presentation counted on the attendance of the vice-rector for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Salvador Garcia Fortes; the dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. Dolors Tapias; the vice-dean of Culture of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Manuel Aramendía; and the author of the work, Jaime Yagüe.
