Salvador Cañigueral, lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutical Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the UB, was appointed new first vice-president of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission for the 2019-2022 period. The appointment took place in the 164th meeting of the institution, which took place in Strasbourg. Expert Goran Benković, member of the Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (Croatia), was appointed second vice-president of the entity.

Salvador Cañigueral, lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology and Therapeutical Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Food Sciences of the UB, was appointed new first vice-president of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission for the 2019-2022 period. The appointment took place in the 164th meeting of the institution, which took place in Strasbourg. Expert Goran Benković, member of the Agency for Medicinal Products and Medical Devices (Croatia), was appointed second vice-president of the entity.

The European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) is a benchmark for the control of quality of medicines applied to in the thirty-eight European countries and more than a hundred countries worldwide. It belongs to the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EQDM) from the European Council, and its objective is to publish the official rules that build up the legal and scientific base for the quality control during development, production and trade processes of medicines.

The European Pharmacopoeia Commission, presided by Professor Torbjörn Arvidsson, from the Medical Products Agency in Sweden, is formed by the representative delegations of the signers of the Convention of the Elaboration of a European Pharmacopoeia, and is the body in charge of technical decisions to create and maintain the content to be published in the Pharmacopoeia.

Lecturer Salvador Cañigueral is member of the research group on Neuropsychopharmacology of Amphetamine Derivatives of the UB. Since 2014, he has presided the National Committee of the Spanish Royal Pharmacopaeia and the National Formulary of the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS), the reference code that establishes the quality of the active and excipient principles of the medicines for human and veterinary use.

Salvador Cañigueral has collaborated since 1992 with the Spanish Royal Pharmacopeia as member and president of the groups on Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry. Since 1999, he has collaborated as expert in the European Pharmacopoeia. He is now member of the working group on plant extracts and the expert groups 13A -which he presides since 2011- and 13B, focused on the field of drugs and herbal preparations.
