On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, Josep Maria Bricall (Barcleona, 1936), was invested as doctor honoris causa by Ramon Llull University (URL), proposed by ESADE institution. Bricall, as Eduard Bonet, emeritus lecturer at the URL, highlighted, “had taught Economics at ESADE from 1961 to 1970, coinciding with the first years of the School that marked the viability and identity of our institution”. Bonet noted that the students and lecturers that lived those education years “he brings feelings and memories that are important in our lives, full of effort, difficulties and dreams” and for ESADE, “it is the recovery of a great part of history to understand the training of institutional values and helps the institution face the future”.

Josep M. Bricall, doctor in Law and Economic Sciences was also a professor at the University of Balearic Islands, and professor at the University of Barcelona since 1983 -in the area of Political Economics and Treasury. He was member of the Government of Generalitat de Catalunya presided by Josep Tarradellas, first as general secretary of the Presidency (1977-1979), and minister of Governance (1979-1980). In the elections at the Parliament of Catalonia in 1984, he was elected as member of the parliament but he renounced before being elected rector of the UB, a position he held from 1986 to 1994. Between 1994 and 1998, he presided the Conference of Rectors of European Universities. He launched the report Universidad 2000, also known as Informe Bricall, promoted by the Conference of Rectors of the Spanish Universities. In 1994, he received the Saint Georgeʼs Cross and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Rovira i Virgili University. One year later, he was given the Order of Alfonso X the Wise. In 2003, he was appointed member of the National Committee for Evaluation, a body of the French universities and higher education centers. Since 2006 he has been member of the Institute for Catalan Studies in the Section of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and supernumerary member of the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences. He has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the universities of Soka (Japan), Marne la Vallé and Paris XII (France), Babes-Bolyai Cluj-Napoca (Romania) and Bologna (Italy). Among his many academic works are Política econòmica de la Generalitat (1936-1939), La planificación económica and Introducció a lʼeconomia.
