The Bellvitge Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBELL) is a research foundation that was set
up on 16 June 2004 as a separate legal entity, as a result of the change in name of the former
August Pi i Sunyer Foundation (FAPS), which had been founded in 1988. IDIBELL has scientific
cooperation agreements with the following institutions and centres:
- The University of Barcelona (UB) and the Barcelona Science Park (PCB)
- Bellvitge University Hospital (HUB)
- Catalan Institute of Oncology (ICO)
- Institute of Diagnostic Imaging (IDI)
- Transfusion Centre and Tissue Bank (BST)
Six major areas or programs have been defined at IDIBELL:
- Area 1. Cancer and human molecular genetics
- Area 2. Neurosciences
- Area 3. Infectious pathology and transplants
- Area 4. Growth factors, hormones and diabetes
- Area 5. Inflammatory, chronic and degenerative diseases
- Area 6. Epigenetics and Cancer Biology
