Language requirements

Language requirements for access to certain university master's degrees

 

Master's degree Level
Physical Activity and Health

To access the master's degree, students must have English level B1 CEFR or equivalent.

Aquaculture

Students must have an English level equivalent to B2 CEFR.

Health Care and Collaborative Practice

Classes are taught in Spanish and, as the course involves the reading and analysis of numerous scientific articles, students are expected to have a level of English sufficient to perform these tasks.

Bioinformatics for Health Sciences

Students must prove that they have reached English level B2 CEFR.

Biomedicine

Students must have knowledge of English (at level B1 CEFR or equivalent).

Cognitive Science and Language

Students' knowledge of English must be equivalent to level B2 CEFR.

Financial and Actuarial Sciences

Students must provide evidence of their English language knowledge (at level B1 or equivalent). International students whose native language is not Spanish must also prove that they have an advanced level of Spanish or Catalan.

Podiatric Surgery

Credit will be given for knowledge of foreign languages (preferably English).

Citizenship and Human Rights: Ethics and Politics

Students who take the English specialization must prove that they have English level B2 CEFR.

Advanced Medical Competences

Students must have knowledge of different languages to teach and disseminate information to expert and non-expert audiences.

Specialized Communication

Students must have an English level equivalent to B1 CEFR and a good command of Catalan and Spanish.

Construction and Representation of Cultural Identity

Students who wish to take subjects that are taught in English should have an English level equivalent to C1 CEFR.

Contemporary Artistic Creation

Basic knowledge of English or French is required.

Creation and Management of New Technology-Based Firms

Students should have a sound knowledge of English

Criminology, Criminal Justice Policy and Sociology of Crime

Students should have a sound knowledge of English, as much of the recommended reading is published in this language.

Nursing Care: Methodology and Applications

Students must prove that they have English level B1 CEFR.

Sport Business Management

Students should demonstrate a good command of Spanish and English (level B1 CEFR)..

Tourism Business Management

Command of Spanish. International students whose first language is not Spanish must provide evidence of their level through certification or an online test.

Hotel and Restaurant Management

Command of Spanish and English. International students whose first language is not Spanish must provide evidence of their level through certification or an online test.

Urban Design: Art, City, Society

Students must have English level B1 and Spanish level B1. Students should also have recognized knowledge of Portuguese (written and spoken).

Business Law

Students must have a command of English that is sufficient to analyse and compare the basic principles of private law in legal texts on common law.

Economics

This master's degree is taught in English. Therefore, students must have a certificate of level B2 CEFR or equivalent.

Economics, Regulation and Competition in Public Services

When Spanish is not one of the languages that is regularly used by candidates, they must prove their ability by passing a Spanish test.

Renewable Energy and Energy Sustainability

Candidates must have a good command of English.

Environmental Engineering

Candidates must have a level of English equivalent to B2 CEFR.

Biomedical Engineering

Candidates must have a good command of English.

Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics

Candidates must be able to communicate their knowledge and conclusions in clear, unambiguous English to specialized and non-specialized audiences.

Geological Engineering and Mining Engineering

Candidates must submit a certificate of English level B2.2 ECFR that is recognized by the UPC.

Chemical Engineering

Candidates must have knowledge of English (at least level B1).

Spanish as a Foreign Language in Professional Environments

Students whose first language is not Spanish must be able to demonstrate a high level of oral and written skills in this language (level C1 or C2 ECFR). Candidates should have English level B2 ECFR. They should also have a command of another foreign language.

Advanced Studies in Catalan Language and Literature

International students who have not been on an Erasmus exchange in a Catalan university or taken subjects in Catalan must provide a certificate of Catalan proficiency at level C1 or C2 ECFR.

Advanced Studies in Social Exclusion

Candidates must have a perfect command of Spanish or Catalan. Candidates must also have a sound knowledge of other languages for study and research.

Women, Gender and Citizenship

Credit will be given for knowledge of Catalan, Spanish and another language.

Analytical Philosophy

Candidates must have a level of English equivalent to B2 ECFR; 7.00 IELTS; or 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (Internet-based) TOEFL.

Advanced Physics

 Candidates must have a level of English equivalent to B2 ECFR.

Training of Teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language

Students whose first language is not Spanish must demonstrate a high level of oral and written skills in this language (level C1 or C2 ECFR). Candidates should have at least English level B2 ECFR. Credit is also given for knowledge of other languages (for example, French, German or Italian).

Teacher Training in Obligatory Secondary and Upper Secondary School Education, Vocational Training and Languages

Candidates must have a level B1 ECFR certificate in another language. International students must provide evidence of their knowledge of Catalan and Spanish (level B1) on pre-enrolment, and must have obtained level B2 by the end of the master's degree. If there are concerns about students' levels of Spanish or Catalan at the start of the degree, the university may ask them to take a test.

People who wish to access courses on teaching foreign languages, namely English, French, German or Italian, must provide evidence of their level (C1 or C2) in the corresponding language, in addition to their university qualification.

Genetics and Genomics

Students must prove that they have a sound knowledge of English, as many classes and seminars, as well as most of the teaching material, may be in this language.

Reservoir Geology and Geophysics

English is considered the lingua franca and language of instruction in this master's degree. Therefore, future students should have knowledge at level A2 or B1 ECFR.

Cultural Management

Students should demonstrate a good command of Spanish and English (level B1 CEFR).

Management of Digital Contents

Credit will be given for candidates' level of English.

Contemporary History and Today's World

Classes are taught in Spanish and Catalan.However, candidates should have a level of English and French equivalent to A2 ECFR as teaching materials could include texts in English and French, according to an agreement made by the master's degree Coordination Committee.

Economic History

Candidates must provide certification of English level B1 ECFR or equivalent and Spanish level B2 or equivalent. If they cannot provide certification, the Admissions Committee may organize a face-to-face or online meeting with students to evaluate their language knowledge.

Innovation in Design for the Tourism Sector

Candidates must have at least English level B1 ECFR (which must be certified) and should have sufficient knowledge of Spanish to write, understand and make themselves understood easily in this language.

Innovation in Tourism Management

Command of Spanish. International students whose first language is not Spanish must provide evidence of their level through certification or an online test.

Artificial Intelligence

Candidates must certify that they have English level B2.1 ECFR or equivalent.

Internationalization: Economic, Commercial, Legal and Political Aspects

Candidates should have knowledge of Spanish and English (level B1 ECFR or equivalent), which they must certify if these are not their first languages. If they cannot provide certification, the Admissions Committee may organize a face-to-face or online meeting with the students to evaluate their language knowledge.

Psychosocial Intervention

Candidates must have a good level of Spanish and Catalan comprehension, and be able to read scientific texts in English.

Leadership and Management Nursing

Candidates must have a good knowledge of a foreign language.

Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition in Multilingual Contexts

Candidates must provide evidence of English level C1 ECFR or equivalent, as the master's degree and all of the assignments will be undertaken in this language.

Pure and Applied Logic

The level of English required to take this master's degree is B1 ECFR. Students must be able to understand class explanations and complete written exercises and assignments in English.

Marketing and Market Research

Candidates must provide evidence of at least English level B1 ECFR or equivalent.

Advanced Mathematics

Given that the master's degree is taught in English, candidates must have knowledge of this language to take the course (at least B1 ECFR).

Conflict Mediation

Candidates should have a level of English equivalent to B1 ECFR.

Medicine, Health and the Healthcare System

Candidates should have English level B1 ECFR.

Translational Medicine

Credit is given for language knowledge, specifically English level B2 ECFR or equivalent.

Neurosciences

Candidates should have good reading comprehension of English texts.

Nutrition and Metabolism

Credit is given for knowledge of English

Oceanography and Marine Environmental Management

Students should have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent, as all the classes refer to documents in this language.

Paleontology

Candidates should have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent. If students do not have an officially recognized qualification, their language knowledge will be assessed by the Coordination Committee during the candidate selection process.

Contemporary Thought and Classical Tradition

Candidates should have basic knowledge (reading ability), or a commitment to gain this knowledge before the end of the master's degree, in some of the cultural languages that were predominant in the historical period corresponding to the chosen specialization.

Psychogerontology

Credit will be given for the ability to read scientific texts in English.

Educational Psychology-MIPE

Candidates must have knowledge of foreign languages, and particularly English, at level B2 ECFR or equivalent.

General Health Psychology

A good command (level C) of Catalan and Spanish is required. Candidates must be able to understand scientific texts in English.

Analytical Chemistry

Candidates must have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent.

Applied Materials Chemistry

Candidates must have a good level of English (B1 ECFR). Although English is not the language of instruction, documents (such as the recommended reading) will regularly be used in this language.

Organic Chemistry

Candidates should have a working knowledge of English, including reading, speaking and writing. They must be able to make oral presentations (in public) and written presentations in the three languages of the master's degree (Catalan, Spanish and English), and they must understand scientific and technical documents on chemistry in English.

Theoretical Chemistry and Computational Modelling

International candidates must provide evidence of English or Spanish level B2.

Clinical Research

Candidates must have sound English knowledge.

Drug Research, Development and Control

Candidates must have at least English level B1 ECFR or equivalent and must present the corresponding certificate on enrolment. If a student does not have a certificate, the Academic Committee may ask them to complete a language test to ensure that they can follow the master's degree.

Research in Behaviour and Cognition

Candidates must have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent.

Research in Language and Literature Teaching

Candidates must have Spanish level B2 and English level B1.

Business Research

Candidates should have strong knowledge of the English language.

International relations

English language certificates and grades are accepted: TOEFL (minimum 550 paper-based or 80 on the Internet), IELTS (6.0 or higher) and Cambridge First Certificate (A-C). In Spanish, candidates should have at least the intermediate level of the Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE).

Health, Biotechnology and Computing

Candidates must have one of the following English qualifications: TOEFL, TOEIC or IELTS. The grades must be at least 580 (paper-based), 237 (computer-based) or 92-93 (on the Internet). The minimum IELTS grade is 6.5.

Food Safety

Students must have good knowledge of English to take the master's degree, in order to read and analyse documents and scientific papers. Classes will be taught in Catalan and Spanish.

Occupational Health and Safety: Occupational Risk Prevention

Knowledge of another language (preferably English).

International Security

A high level of English is required. The following qualifications are accepted: TOEFL (at least 90 on the Internet or 550 paper-based), IELTS (6.5 or above), Cambridge Advanced Certificate (A-C) and Cambridge Proficiency exam (A-C).

Sociology: Social Transformations and Innovation

SCandidates must have English level B1 ECFR or equivalent, and Spanish level B2 ECFR or equivalent. Certificates are required.If students cannot submit a certificate, the Admissions Committee may organize a face-to-face or online meeting to assess their language knowledge.
