Científics d'arreu món alerten a l’Humantitat. Segona Alerta
15.364 científics de 184 països diferents (entre ells membres de l’IRBio) signen el Manifest “Scientists’ Warning to Humanity: A Second Notice” publicat a la revista BioScience el passat dia 1 de desembre del 2017 (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/bix125). L’any 1992, la Unió de Concerned Scientists i més de 1.700 científics independents van escriure " World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity ". Aquests científics estaven preocupats per l’estat del planeta Terra i feien una crida a la humanitat a reduir la destrucció ambiental advertint que es requereix un gran canvi en la nostra gestió de la Terra i la seva vida, si es vol evitar la misèria humana.
En el seu manifest, van mostrar que els humans estan en col·lisió amb el món natural. Van expressar la seva preocupació pel que fa als danys actuals, imminents o potencials en el planeta Terra que impliquen: l'esgotament de l'ozó, la disponibilitat d'aigua dolça, l'esgotament de la vida marina, les zones mortes a l'oceà, la pèrdua forestal, la destrucció de la biodiversitat, el canvi climàtic i el creixement continuat de la població humana. I es va anunciar que es necessitaven urgentment canvis fonamentals per evitar les conseqüències que la nostra trajectòria actual pot comportar en un futur.
Després d’aquests vint-i-cinc anys del seu primer Manifest, es revisa i s’avalua l’estat del planeta concloent que: la humanitat no ha fet avenços suficients per resoldre els reptes ambientals previstos i, alarmantment, la majoria d'ells estan empitjorant. Aquest segon Manifest aconsella a la humanitat que necessita canviar la seva manera de fer per ajudar al planeta sinó volem arribar al col·lapse.
