Abstract: One important tradition in 20th century philosophy is engaged in a critical and constructive assessment of our representational devices.
This tradition goes back to Frege (and before that Kant), the logical positivists, and current practitioners include writers as diverse as Sally Haslanger and revisionists about truth.
In this talk I first provide a general framework for thinking about that tradition and then try to answer a fundamental objection to it.
