ITAP Annual Conference 2026

The main theme of the conference will be The Pragmatics of written communication. This year we especially welcome contributions that address pragmatic phenomena in written communication, including but not limited to: storybooks or narrative materials that foreground pragmatic features, online communications (e-mails, forums, social media), AI-mediated discourse, corpora of written interaction, and innovative pedagogical or analytical approaches to pragmatics in written genres. Submissions should situate research within the broad field of teaching pragmatics and contribute to advancing understanding of pragmatic competence in written contexts.
The following scholars will be the keynote speakers:
● Andrew D. Cohen (Emeritus professor, University of Minnesota)
● Inekke Vedder and Folkert Kuiken (University of Amsterdam)
● Wei Ren (Beihang University)
1. Presentation types
A) Individual oral presentations: 20-minute oral presentations, followed by 10 minutesfor questions and discussion. Presentations should be prepared with the aim of addressing a wide audience (e.g., both researchers and practitioners).
B) Workshops: 30-minute hands-on sessions which should include a variety of practical activities in order to engage the audience in the session.
2. Topics
The presentations and workshops may include the following topics, but other topics related to the conference’s theme will be welcome:
● Research on the implementation and/or effects of different written resources for the teaching of L2 pragmatics.
● Analyses of written texts (e.g. story books, AI generated texts, film or TV series scripts) for the teaching of L2 pragmatics.
● Adaptations of already-existing written materials for the teaching of L2 pragmatics.
● Design (and implementation) of teacher-created texts for the teaching of L2 pragmatics.
● Teaching practices (See Workshops above) that focus on the implementation of written materials for the teaching of L2 pragmatics.
● Teaching and assessment of written L2 pragmatic competence.
3. Submissions
Your proposal should be sent as an anonymised file that includes the title of your proposal, an abstract no longer than 300 words, and relevant references. Please, use Times New Roman 12 pt and 1,5 space. English is the conference language. Please, name the file “ITAP2026Proposal“. Do not include any personal details in the file name.
4. Important dates
● Proposal submission deadline: March 2nd, 2026.
● Notification of acceptance: March 26th, 2026.
● Registration: From March 26th to May 3rd, 2026.
5. Registration fees*
● Presenter (in person/online): 30€/15€
● Attendee (in person/online): 20€/free
*Participants from countries listed in the DAC list of ODA recipients will be eligible for a fee waiver.
