Process of elaboration and defence of the doctoral thesis

In the first academic year in which the admission to the doctoral programme and the enrolment in academic tutelage have been formalized, the doctoral student must prepare and present a research plan1.

Beginning the following year, in which the research plan has been accepted, the Academic Committee of the programme must follow up and evaluate2 the progress made on this plan and the documentation of training activities.

After completing the thesis, the doctoral student must request the authorization of the Academic Committee of the programme to schedule the deposit and the defence of the doctoral thesis3. This request may be submitted if the research plan has obtained two consecutive positive annual monitoring and evaluation reports.

The Academic Committee of the doctoral programme may authorize the deposit of doctoral theses that have been written in any language of scientific, technical or artistic use different from those established in the programme.

In addition, the Commission may authorize the deposit of doctoral theses as a compendium of publications.

The process of the preparation and presentation of the doctoral thesis ends with its public defence before a court that must evaluate it. The authorization of the defence of the thesis and the appointment of the members of the court are the responsibilities of the Doctoral Subcommittee of the Faculty of Education.

With regard to the issuance of the official title of Doctor of Philosophy, it is possible to include on the obverse of the same the mention of international doctorate whenever a series of circumstances concur.

To create a framework of scientific collaboration between the research teams of different international universities and UB and to promote the mobility of doctoral students, a co-supervision procedure for doctoral theses has been established.
