Curriculum

The master's degree in Medieval Cultures has a total study load of 90 credits, distributed between four subject areas.
Subject Area 1: instrumental discipline-specific subjects, compulsory, 25 credits. This area provides the basic knowledge and techniques of historical and literary inquiry that students will need to understand the specific features of society and culture in Europe during the Middle Ages and how these developed over time. It also provides the specific skills needed to read and correctly interpret medieval texts and documents.
Students must complete five subjects, each worth five credits:

  • Writing and Written Culture in the Middle Ages

  • European Feudal Society

  • Medieval Latin Literature

  • Medieval Romance Literature

  • Medieval Latin

Subject Area 2: complementary discipline-specific subjects, optional, 5 credits. This area reinforces the interdisciplinary component of the course. Students select one of two possible subjects, each of which is worth five credits. The choice should reflect their general research interests, and must meet with the approval of the master's degree coordinator: Medieval Art History / Medieval Philosophy.

Subject Area 3: scientific subjects, optional, 30 credits. This area enables students to develop a thorough understanding of the main lines of research and critical standpoints in medieval studies. For this subject area, students must select six optional subjects, each worth five credits. The selection should reflect their research interests and will be overseen by the master's degree coordinator.

Final Project, 30 credits. Students complete an original research project in an area related to the course content, supervised by a member of the master's degree teaching staff (who must be a PhD holder). The final project has two aims: students are expected to integrate and apply the theoretical knowledge, methodologies and instrumental skills acquired during the course, and to generate new knowledge in their area of specialization. This will give them their first experience of intensive research and prepare those interested in further study for the doctoral programme. The project is completed during the second year.
