Group overview
The Sedimentary Geology Group is a consolidated, inter-institutional research team of 34 members — 23 of them holding a Ph.D. — spanning the University of Barcelona (UB), the Botanical Institute of Barcelona (IBB-CSIC), and the Museu de Ciències Naturals de Barcelona (MCNB). Recognized as a Consolidated Research Group on eight occasions since 1994, the group brings together full professors, associate professors, postdoctoral and Ramón y Cajal researchers, senior technical staff, a museum curator, and predoctoral researchers, all organized around seven priority research lines that reflect the breadth and cohesion of our scientific activity.
Stable core group
The stable core comprises 12 researchers, 41.7% of whom are women. The team's cohesion is reflected in its scientific output: since May 2022, the group has published 220 articles, 76 of them (34.5%) co-authored by two or more group members, with 55% published in open access and 75% involving international co-authors.

International and national reach
Our research is built on strong collaborative networks. International partners include Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie (Arizona State University, USA), with whom stable core member L. Gibert co-authored a 2025 Nature article; Drs. Alan Deino and Gary Scott (Berkeley Geochronology Center, USA); Drs. Josep Anton Moreno-Bedmar and Antoni Camprubí (UNAM, Mexico); Dr. Mónica Morayma Solórzano Kraemer (Senckenberg Museum, Germany); Dr. Paul D. Bons (Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Germany); Dr. Jean-Pierre Sizun (Université de Franche-Comté, France); Dr. Fabien L. Condamine (Institut des Sciences de l'Evolution de Montpellier, France); Dr. John Parnell (University of Aberdeen, UK); Dr. Lisard Torró (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, Peru); Dr. Thomas Aiglsperger (Luleå University of Technology, Sweden); Paula Granero (Universität Wien, Austria); Dr. Aixa Tosal (Chengdu University of Technology, China); and Dr. William Cavazza (University of Bologna, Italy).
At the national level, we collaborate closely with Dr. Ramon Salas (Reial Acadèmia Europea de Doctors); Drs. Núria Pujol and Julio Aguirre (Universidad de Granada); Dr. Marc Aurell (Universidad de Zaragoza); Dr. Alba Vicente (Institut Català de Paleontologia); Drs. Albert Griera, Antoni Teixell and David Gómez-Gras (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona); and Dr. Idael Blanco (Universitat d'Alacant).
The group's visibility is further reflected in 164 oral and 50 poster presentations at 91 international and 29 national conferences since May 2022 — including the International Sedimentological Congress (Beijing, 2022), the EGU General Assembly (Vienna, 2023-2025), STRATI 2023 (Lille), and DRT-2024 (Barcelona), the latter co-organized by group members. Beyond academic venues, the group is actively engaged in science outreach through initiatives such as Pint of Science Barcelona, the Science Festival, Geolodía, Geoolympics for secondary schools, and international programs including the 100 IUGS Geological Heritage Sites and the Outcropedia project.
