Abstract: An agent is objectively rational iff she believes and acts in accordance with what the objective rules of rationality dictate, whatever these rules might be. In the case of subjective rationality, agents believe and act according to their own standards of rationality, i.e., they believe that p iff they believe that it is rational to believe that p. There are several structural analogies between subjective rationality and objective rationality. For example, both can involve higher-order beliefs and complex processes of inquiry, self-reflection, and belief-revision. In this paper, I will first compare and contrast subjective and objective rationality along various dimensions. Then, I will investigate the requirements for merely subjectively rational agents to become objectively rational. As I will argue, this procedure requires from the agent some form of epistemic akrasia.
