Abstract: The problem of the many is a problem about ordinary objects and their parts. There is a single cloud in the sky, but a number of different collections of water droplets. Which collection composes the cloud? It seems there is no principled way to answer this question. In this paper, I will diagnose the problem of the many as a series of four separate problems. Three of these are already separate issues, but one is distinctive. I will then offer new solutions to these problems. The diagnosis will rely on the use of a theoretical tool – situations. The solutions rely further on a controversial metaphysical picture that can be articulated using this tool, and which I have developed elsewhere.
