David Gallardo-Pujol

A short introduction…

My research interests lie in general in understanding why we behave in a certain way or another. The most excitement for me comes from predicting specific behavior in specific situations using biological, psychological, and social data. In other words, trying to understand human behavior. Also, I have outstanding experience in developing custom-tailored solutions and personalizing behavioral targets using individual differences. My latest applied activities are related to this.

As a PI of the IDLab, I currently have five main lines of research: 1) Quantitative methods in psychometrics and evaluation: This line of research focuses on structural equation models (García-Forero, Maydeu-Olivares & Gallardo-Pujol, 2009) and item response theory (IRT) and, more generally, in the development of new quantitative methods. 2) Person-situation interactions: This line of research is mainly interested in the interaction between people and situations, or more generally “people in situations”. We have contributed to the development of a new and groundbreaking model for evaluating situations (Rauthmann, Gallardo-Pujol et al., 2014). 3) Neuroscience of personality: we have recently investigated the neuroanatomical brain bases of the personality traits of the Big Five model, but also of the general personality factor (Burgaleta & Gallardo-Pujol, 2021). 4) Personality computing: our group, together with the HuPBA group, is a pioneer when it comes to using Deep Learning methods to extract the personality levels of a person based on the automatic analysis of multimodal data (audio, video, natural language, metadata, etc), with a fairly high degree of accuracy. The first publication where the open database in which we have developed the models is presented is already published (Palmero et al., 2020), as well as the first technical description of the methods we have used, known as Dyadformer (Curto et al. ., 2021). The first substantive publications regarding personality are about to be published (Gallardo-Pujol et al., in preparation). 5) Clinical applications in psychological evaluation: Finally, the group has a very important activity in terms of applications, especially in clinical psychology and psychiatry, of psychological evaluation and that is especially relevant for this project. Aspects such as post-traumatic growth have also received our attention (Pajón, Greco, Pereda, & Gallardo-Pujol, 2020), as well as the relationship between temperament, executive function, and ADHD (Krieger, Amador-Campos, & Gallardo-Pujol, 2019). In the group, we have also developed some forensic applications, especially in relation to impulsivity, burnout, or the prediction of police performance (Forero, Gallardo-Pujol, Maydeu-Olivares, & Andrés-Pueyo, 2009; Gallardo-Pujol et al., 2015; García-Forero, Gallardo-Pujol, Maydeu-Olivares, & Andrés-Pueyo, 2009).

All in all, I currently have more than 15 years of experience working on different basic and applied aspects of the evaluation and prediction of behavior. I am the secretary-general of the European Association of Psychological Assessment since 2017 and a member of the editorial board of the European Journal of Psychological Assessment, the European Journal of Personality, and the Personality and Social Psychology Compass, which has allowed me intensive collaborations with Dr. Matthias Ziegler or Dr. John Rauthmann. I have published over 70 articles in refereed journals: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=zGDZeOYAAAAJ&hl=en
