Wendy Elvira-García is an assistant professor (Serra Húnter tenure-track program) working at the University of Barcelona (Spain), member of the Phonetics Laboratory, academic coordinator of the Cognitive Science and Language master program and editor-in-chief of Estudios de Fonética Experimental.
She is PI for a project that aims to characterize motor speech in fronto-temporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) using phonetic variables and automatise its analysis (PID2022-139004OA-I00).
She is author and coauthor of 30 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals (24 JCR), a book review and more than 60 congress presentations. In addition to this, she has published 2 books (1 as sole author, 1 coauthored), coauthored 16 book chapters, and edited two books. She has been keynote speaker in congresses 5 times and been invited to give conferences in universities from 5 countries.
Her research interests are both theoretical and applied phonetics.
Her theoretical research deals with the syntax/pragmatics-prosody interface from the perspective of construction grammar and particularly the prosody of insubordination. In applied phonetics, she works mainly programming tools that can be used in clinical and forensic acoustic analysis. She is particularly proud of an automatic transcriber of Spanish and Catalan intonation and a software for calculating prosodic distances among different linguistic varieties (dialectometry).
She has previously worked as postdoc researcher "Juan de la Cierva" in the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia, as Phonetics lecturer (adjunct) in the Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Spain) and Universität Onsnabrück (Germany) and as invited professor in he Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (Chile).
She has taught multiple subjects dealing with Phonetics and Corpus Linguistics and she has been the PI of a teaching innovation project for improving the Spanish Phonetics course in the UNED.
