Conferència "Measurements and modeling of the effects of dust and pollution on clouds and precipitation"

Notícia | 13-12-2007

Dr. Zev Levin, Dept. of Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, Univ. of Tel Aviv, Israel
Using airborne and ground measurements some characteristics of dust storms in the Eastern Mediterranean have been analyzed. It was shown that dust particles transported at low levels are often coated with sea salt. This is different from our previous studies that showed that dust transported at higher levels are often coated with sulfate. In both cases, the mechanism of the formation of the soluble coating is thought to be in-cloud processes.
Regardless of the mechanism that forms the soluble coating, these particles are converted to giant cloud condensation nuclei which could affect cloud growth and precipitation development.
The lecture will cover some elements from both the observations and the modeling results.
