Communication and the Culture Industry

CIC specificities

Characteristics

The TFG for the Communication and Cultural Industries degree has a load of 12 credits, which means 300 hours of work for the student. The training activities of the TFG correspond fundamentally to the independent work of the student and, therefore, are distributed, in general, as follows:

Face-to-face activities (tutorials): 25 hours

Independent work: 275 hours

TOTAL: 300 hours (12 ECTS credits)

The degree in Communication and cultural industries has in its study plan compulsory external internships of 24 credits that are carried out throughout the 4th year and involve the immersion of the student in a real work environment. Since the TFG is carried out in the 2nd semester of the 4th year, while the student is carrying out these work practices, it is recommended to link both subjects in order to strengthen the link between the degree and the professional practice.

For this reason, different types of TFG are considered:

  • In-depth study and/or synthesis based on the research of bibliographic sources (state of the issue, review, synthesis, theoretical and conceptual development).
  • Essay or work where the acquired knowledge and skills are applied.
  • Creative project in different formats, of a professional nature and linked to the external internships.

Now, although the work that must be delivered at the end of the semester can be presented in any format, in any case, it must contain a written report that states at least:

-A brief in Catalan or Spanish and an abstract in English.

-Written drafting of the approach, development and conclusions of the work.

The student will receive the guidance of a tutor who will preferably be a professor of the Communication and Cultural Industries degree.

In order to assign a tutor to guide the student in preparing his TFG, the following procedure is followed:

  • At the time of enrollment, the student enrolls in the only group of TFG that is programmed in the degree.
  • During the second fortnight of September and the first of October, the TFG Commission publishes a list of tutors with the thematic areas on which the TFGs of the students it tutors will focus.
  • A pre-registration period will open where the student establishes a priority in the options offered.
  • Once the pre-registration has been completed and the students' proposals have been collected, the TFG Commission assigns the student a tutor, according to the following criteria:
    • average grade of the academic record as of July 30 of the previous year.

The process of preparing the TFG by the student follows a process marked by the two collective sessions that are mandatory, although the tutor can schedule some more, if he considers it appropriate.

In this way, the preparation of the TFG progresses with the following sequence:

INITIAL PHASE

1. First collective session. At the beginning of the semester, the TFG Committee convenes a meeting with tutors and students. The TFG Coordinator comments on the teaching plan of the subject, guides them on the characteristics of the work, on the individual and collective tutorials and on the evaluation system. Each of the tutors facilitates a specific selection of topics for the students they tutor.

2. The starting point for the preparation of the TFG is, as is clear, in the determination of the topic of the work, which will be done in agreement with the tutor assigned and within a certain time limit, which is he advises it to be about fifteen days.

3. From this moment on, the student must delve deeper into the chosen topic, establishing the work objectives, the methodology to be followed, the basic bibliography and their action plan. Through individual sessions, the tutor guides the students in setting objectives, methodological and documentary issues and monitors the development of the work.

INTERMEDIATE PHASE

4. Second collective session, which takes place approximately a month and a half before the end of the TFG. The student makes an oral presentation about the work in progress in front of tutors from the TFG and the other students enrolled in the TFG. The session is public. The fundamental objective of this session is to monitor progress in the development of the TFG, to guide the student with the contributions of the tutors, peers and tutors and to evaluate the student's oral competence, that is to say, the correction in the student's expression and ability to debate.

FINAL PHASE

5. From the oral presentation, understood as work in progress, the student is already in the final phase of the TFG. Through individualized sessions, the tutor guides the student in the problems and doubts related to the conclusion of the work and in the aspects related to the writing and presentation of the written report.

6. At the end of the semester, on the day, time and place set at the beginning of the year by the TFG Committee, the student must deliver:

  •     Written report according to the criteria set in the teaching plan
  •     Resum en català o espanyol.
  •     Summary in English.
  •     If applicable, project in an audiovisual format, recorded on CD or DVD, as appropriate.
  •     Delivery to the Virtual Campus of the report, summaries and, where appropriate, the project.
  •     Signed declaration of authorship (on paper)

7. The student who opts for the Excellent or MH qualification will have to appear in a public and oral defense of the TFG with a graphic exhibition (in poster format) and/or audiovisual of the TFG, exhibited in spaces of the Faculty skills for this purpose.
