Students in possession of academic documents issued outside Spain that are required by the UB for administrative purposes must ensure that they have original copies issued by the competent authorities, in accordance with the applicable legal framework in the country of issue. In most cases, these documents must be translated and legalized.

Official translation of academic documents

Concept

Original documents that were not issued in Catalan, Spanish or English* must be submitted together with official translations into Catalan or Spanish. Documents requiring legalization must be translated once this procedure has been completed. The official translation must therefore include all text relating to the legalization procedure.

NB: The official translation must be accompanied by the original document.

* By agreement of the Governing Council of the University of Barcelona, announced on 5 October 2010.

Procedures for which official translations are required

Official translations are required for a number of procedures, including the following:

  • Study of equivalence of a foreign qualification for admission to a university master's degree course or doctoral program.
  • Study of equivalence of a foreign qualification for admission to a UB-specific master's degree or postgraduate diploma.
  • Partial validation of foreign studies.
  • Homologation of foreign doctoral degree qualifications.

Documents requiring official translation

  • Degree certificates.
  • Academic certificates
  • Certification from the ministry of education or equivalent body in the country of issue that the qualification grants access to university master's degree study/doctoral studies.
  • European Diploma Supplement.
  • Other documents required by UB bodies in order to complete the correponding administrative procedure.

Official translations accepted

A. Official translation by a sworn translator/interpreter registered in Spain:

The translator/interpreter must appear in the Updated listed of sworn translators-interpreters published by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MAEC). If this is not the case, the translation will not be considered valid.

The content of the official translation must correspond exactly to the full content of the original document, including all text relating to the legalization procedure.

The translated document must be stamped by the translator.

B. Official translation issued by the relevant diplomatic authority:

The diplomatic authorities in the country of issue or country in which the documents are to be submitted are legally empowered to produce or authenticate translations.

In both cases, the diplomatic authority responsible for producing or authenticating the translation must certify that official translation corresponds exactly to the full content of the original document, including all text relating to the legalization procedure.

Diplomatic authorities usually attach certification to the document, similar to the following example:

Model translation issued by an embassy/consulate

C. Official translator abroad:

To be valid this translation must bear legalization of the translator's signature
