Rossella Magli

Rossella Magli holds a degree in Law from the University of Bologna, a Master in International Relations from Johns Hopkins University, and a “DEA” (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondis) in Communication, Technologies and Power from Sorbonne University in Paris, specializing in Anthropology of Communication.
Her research focuses on the social appropriation of information and communication technologies in educational settings, both formal and informal, the evaluation of the social impact of technologies through ethnographic methods, the innovation of educational systems, the co-design of new technology interfaces and educational scenarios in schools, the creation of teachers’ communities of practices.  With respect to technologies, she is interested in the promotion of their systemic and ecological integration in educational environments taking into account the history, value systems and goals of these environments.

Professor of Developmental Psychology, at the University of Aix-Marseille, France. Currently a Visiting Scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture, Center for Advanced Visual Studies, and Visiting Professor at the University of Siena, Department of Communication, she teaches graduate students, conducts research and consults for companies, institutions, and organizations interested in the intersections between learning, teaching, design, and digital technologies. Previously, Ackermann was a Senior Research Scientist at MERL – a Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratory, Cambridge, MA; an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media laboratory, in Cambridge, MA; and a Scientific Collaborator at the Centre International d'Epistémologie Génétique, under the direction of Jean Piaget, Geneva. She started her career as a Maitre-Assistant of Psychology at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Edith K. Ackermann received a Doctor of Developmental Psychology [Com Laude] (1981); two Master's degrees in Developmental Psychology and Clinical Psychology (1970); and a Bachelor of Experimental Psychology degree (1969), all from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

In 2004 she accomplished a Post-Graduate Master in “Communication Designer”, ArsnovaSiena -Multimedia Art Academy- Siena, Italy. In 2002 she discussed her graduation thesis, about the design of transitional spaces in the museums. Course of Human-Machine Interaction at the University of Siena, Italy From 2002 she attends several national and international projects: The three years international research project ERT “Production of Educational Format” (in the international network of excellence Kaleidoscope) to create educational format architectures to support educational activities (from 2004).Ethnographic observation and video analysis for music learning activities organised by the Tempo Reale Center, Firenze, Italy (2005-2006).The national project DIDA partnership between Siena Communication Science Department and the University of Siena to design a system for the learning and knowledge management for University of Siena technical and administrative staff.

He achieved his laurea degree in 2004 with a thesis on the cultural evolution of oenological artefacts, an experimental and theoretical work on heuristics for design. In 2004 he was tutor within the university course multimedia design and within the Siena Design Project 2004 “Design for Collective Spaces” at ARSNOVA multimedia art academy, Siena, Italy. From 2004 he attends international and  national projects: PALCOM - design of innovative health care technology - under the initiative ‘The Disappearing Computer II’. In 1998-2000 he worked in a I3 project, called POGO, on narrative experienced supported by technologies for children. In 2003 he had a Post-Graduate Master in “Communication Designer: Design of environment for communication in collective spaces” within the master he participated to the Siena Design Project n.0. At the moment he is working on a project called DiDà, focused on the design of learning and training processes in a professional environment (for the staff of University of Siena). His main research fields has been within the areas of Learning and Interaction Design.

In 2003 she attended a Post-Graduated Master in Human Resources Management. From 2003 to 2004 she worked for a temporary employement agency in Siena, with the role of Human Resources Recruiter. From the beginning of 2005 she attends a national project: DIDA - design for continuous training systems – national project, University of Siena, partnership between Siena Communication Science Department and the University of Siena for the design of a system for learning and knowledge management UNISI technical and administrative staff.

FNRS researcher at University of Liège in Belgium, Françoise Decortis is responsible of the IKU (Interactions, Knowledge, Usage) research unit. She holds a PhD in Psychology from University of Liège (1992). She performs research at the intersection of learning, design and externalisation of cognition. She was previously a temporary agent at the Joint research centre of Ispra in Italy. She has contributed to various EU programs such as Training and Mobility of Researchers (COTCOS, COSI), I3 Experimental School Environment (POGO). She is a Member of the Scientific Committee on Health and Environment from the French Agence national for research.

Doctor in Education from the University of Barcelona and Master's Degree in Educational Technology from San Francisco State University in the US. he is Professor of Educational multimedia in the Department of Didactics at the University of Barcelona. He holds degrees in Engieneering and in Philosophy, and previously worked as teacher of Mathematics in secondary education. Codirector of the Post-graduate course "Knowledge, Science an citizenship in the Information Society", he teaches in the octoral programme "Diversity an Change in eucation: policies and practices". He coordinates Future Learning (http://www.ub.es/euelearning/), a research group aime at developing research on the educational, cultural an socio-economic aspects of the use of ICT in learning. Future Learning promotes synergies with different disciplines in rethinking knowledge conceptions and knowlege production in the multidimensional spaces that define the European culture of the XXI century. Dr. Barajas has coordinated several EU funded projects.

Martin's role at Futurelab is to think strategically about the ways technology transforms learning. He helps to build new partnerships and bring new ideas into the organisation, and is involved in forming and evolving these ideas by taking them out to learners. Previously, Martin held a teaching and research post at the School of Education in the University of Wales, Bangor. Here he conducted a wide range of learning technology projects, including working with teachers on primary school numeracy with multimedia computers for the Welsh Assembly, and building a virtual e-village for UK and French teenagers. Martin has also worked as an advisory teacher and as a secondary science and technology teacher.

Olga Timcenko is a Senior Echnology Consultant in LEGO Business development, LEGO Systems A/S. She has a Ph.D. in Robotics from Suddansk University in Odense, Denmark. For Last 8 years she has been working for different departments of LEGO on research and development of multimedia materials for children, including LEGO Digital Designer and LEGO Mindstorms. She is active in FIRST LEGO League project (world-wide robotic competition among school children), and Computer-clubhouse project. Her job also includes cooperation with research partners outside LEGO, and she is member of several SIGs and JERIPs of Kaleidoscope Network of excellence. She is author / co-author of 40+ conference and journal papers in the field of robotics and children and technology, and 4 patents in the field of virtual 3D worlds / 3D user interfaces for children. Her recent work was redesign of the Mindstorms iconic programming language for children (the product will be launched world-wide in August 2006).
