Celia Rico visits the Faculty (2019)

Filmmaker Celia Rico, director of the feature film Journey to a mother’s room (Viaje al cuarto de una madre), visited University of Barcelona’s Faculty of Philology to talk to the students of the Degree in Communication and Cultural Industries about her experience producing and shooting her debut.

Rico, who with her short film Luisa is not home (Luisa no está en casa) managed to go to top-level festivals such as Biennale di Venezia, Seminci de Valladolid or the Malaga Film Festival, explained the difficulty of jumping from short film to feature film, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and of having a constant compromise with the project. She also wanted to show to the students the toughest part of cinema, which beyond the final product and the awards takes a lot of work and sacrifice. In that sense, to share the process with the students, she showed them some raw clips from Journey to a mother’s room, as well as videos from the casting that the actresses had to go through. In addition, she explained the steps she had to follow in order to carry out the production, starting with her sources of inspiration to write the script.

The talk, in which Celia Rico was very open and willing to answer to the students’ questions, was inspiring and honest, as it reflected the enormous effort involved in making a film.
