A new turn in the contextualism/relativism debate: “Reasonable” is assessment-sensitive

Abstract

The predictions of relativists in the vein of MacFarlane (2014) have fared poorly: As experimental data shows, the truth-value of claims containing predicates of personal taste or epistemic modals is not assessment-relative, and the alleged requirements to retract do not exist. However, the expression “reasonable”, recent evidence suggests, might be assessment-sensitive, and as such the first expression explored empirically to which the relativist framework actually applies.
