Reference without Cognition

Abstract

This paper criticises the view, recently defended by Kaplan and others, that reference to an individual depends on the speaker’s having the individual in mind, and it defends an externalist view, on which reference with the use of a name requires that a speaker join a systematic practice of using that name as the name of an individual.
