Two ways to Assess a Judgement

22 June 2011  |  15:00  |  Aula 412

Abstract

I shall distinguish two ways of assessing a judgement or a assertion: first, one may assess the performance of the judge or asserter in the sense of examining whether he or she is complying with the norms he or she is subject to. Secondly, one may assess the verdict that the judge or asserter has reached in the sense of agreeing or disagreeing with their judgement. I shall argue that this distinction can help decide between a contextualist and relativist treatment of certain areas of discourse. Moreover, I shall discuss the consequences of these observations for a model of assertoric communication.
