Josep Perelló and Isabelle Bonhoure Isabelle together with the co-researchers Assumpta Mateu and Amanda Figueras received the 2024 Citizen Science Prize of the European Union in the digital communities category. The prize was given along with prestigious prizes like the Golden Nica, the S+T+ARTS Prize and the Ars Electronica Award for Digital Humanity.

The last session of Cròniques de la Calor was held in the Casal de Barri Congrés – Indians with the group of neighbors who went for a walk the week before. The data from their journey were analysed, together with the data from the other two participating groups. The experiences of the neighbors, some of whom have lived in the neighborhood for more than 50 years, helped contextualize the observations. During the summer campaign of 2024, 52 heat walks were held with 481 participants from 5 different neighborhoods.

CoAct for Mental Health has received the European Union’s Prize for Citizen Science 2024 in the digital communities category. With this award, the EU honours excellence in work to support communities, generate social benefits and foster an open and participatory society through the innovative use of digital technologies.

OPUSH partners participated very actively in the last European Citizen Science Association Conference. Project’s results were presented in the form of talks and posters, while a demo was proposed to the visitors of the Citizen Day held at the Natural History Museum.

“Microscale urban heat mapping: building upon the neighbour’s experiences and perceptions” was the title of the oral presentation in European Citizen Science Association held in Vienna and which brought together more than 400 citizen science practitioners. The presentation is available at Zenodo.

Xarxanet Nonprofit is an English-language news portal about the third sector and volunteering in Catalonia. Josep Perelló publishes the post Citizen Science Now where he states that it is the time for third sector organizations to join citizen science. Universities have the obligation to accompany organizations on this journey.

This first conference was organized by the Citizen Science for Health working group of the European Citizen Science Association. It was an opportunity for citizens, patients and academics to share their experiences and knowledge about a growing number of citizen science projects targeting human health. “CoAct for Mental Health” was represented by two Co-Researchers and an academic researcher that together presented a showcase, a workshop and a poster.

OPUSH partners met for a second time face-to-face in Tallin, Estonia. Aside from discussing the progress been made regarding the projects’ execution, field trips were organized to different locations of Tallin city. Concepts like tactical urbanism and public participation in urban planning were discussed based on concrete local experiences.

Our article in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications journal presents a practical case that addresses the challenge of collectively studying social interactions within community-based mental health care. We identify five key steps of the research process to be considered to introduce participatory and inclusive practices: research framing, research design, experimental spaces, data sources, and actionable knowledge.

More than 80 people gathered at the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia for the first Mental Health Community Assembly of the CoAct for Mental Health project. The results of a collaborative process developed over the last three years were presented and discussed jointly with a set of evidence-based policy recommendations.

We organize a satellite on Citizen Social Science, within the CCS2020 conference on complex systems. The workshop explores how community methods, theories and knowledge of complex systems can be enriched with the active participation of citizens and vice versa. Plenary speakers Elisa Omodei, Anxo Sánchez and Jacob Friis Sherson share ideas on how to combine the two fields in their projects.

The candidate will explore stochastic processes and will build specific public, inclusive and participatory experiments on citizens mobility and welfare. The public experiments will narrow down concrete research questions raised with the participation of concerned group of citizens. The SPRU (Science Policy Research Unit) of the University of Sussex is one of the world’s leading research centers on policies and management of science, technology and innovation. During the academic year, the SPRU schedules Friday Seminars, a conference and subsequent debate on a hot topic of the scientific agenda. On November 15, Josep Perelló presented the paper “Citizen Social Science: Participatory research, collective experiments, civic actions and social change”, to introduce citizen science in the processes of social change.

The Syddansk Universitet of Odense, Denmark, hosts the first interdisciplinary symposium on Danish Citizen Science which has the aim to open a debate about its value and its future potential within the Danish society. Josep Perelló, from OpenSystems UB, and Caren Cooper from North Carolina University (USA) are the keynote speakers for the opening lecture. In front an audience of 150 people, Perelló explains how to normalize Citizen Science by introducing it into the common spaces of civil society.

The seminar “Citizen and Social Science: experiences and reflections”, given by Anna Cigarini and Josep Perelló from OpenSystems, gathers twenty attendees from Barcelona Science and Technology Studies Group (STS-b), which includes representatives from UAB and UOC. During the presentation, several citizen science projects promoted by OpenSystems are presented and debated. This seminar is organized jointly by STS-b and the Catalan Agency for Health Quality and Evaluation (AQuAS).

The CCCB’s research and culture innovation laboratory, CCCBLab, publishes several articles written by the OpenSystems team about the importance of citizen science, not only as a method of scientific research but also as an element of social cohesion and community creation. “Citizen Science and social change”, “Citizen Science and Public Libraries” and “Citizen Science and the Arts” offer an extended reading on experiences of this type in several places of the world.

The postdoctoral researcher Julián Vicens and member of OpenSystems presents the collection of data from our citizen science projects through the Citizen Social Lab digital platform.

Hands-on sessions begin. 26 professionals from different libraries in the Barcelona district participate in the Laboratory in order to find and choose citizen science projects and imagine library-friendly activities.

We participate in this workshop that showcases results obtained so far and offers a forum to exchange knowledge and experience on future research developments and funding opportunities.

Enric Sanmartí presents our recent work with the community center Centre Cívic Pere Quart and elder people. The meeting discusses with citizens academic projects that improves social inclusion.

The different working groups has focussed on different aspects: data, education, policy-making and engagement. We focus on the synthesis and the overarching perspective of the whole project.

Being coordinators of the Barcelona Citizen Science Office, we have organised the third edition of the Barcelona Citizen Science Day. More than 30 different projects have been presented in a community center of the city.

The meeting addresses socio-technical and organizational challenges associated with the mainstream establishment of open, self-organized science in society. We present our recent paper linking citizen science and computational social science.

We present “Langevin dynamics and Entropy analysis for studying human movement and human actions” in the 26th IUPAP International conference on Statistical Physics. More than 1,200 attendees participate in this majour event in Statistical Physics.

Mr. Banks, the game of stock market, studies the mechanisms of decision making. The experiment was done in collaboration with Jordi Duch (University Rovira i Virgili).

Moren than 50 delegates gathered in Brussels to hold talks on the fledgling ECSA and voted to establish committees which will drive the association forward.

Our project and Antimatter (CERN) will become new citizen science experiments in this EU project. We propose to build beehives in Barcelona, Bourdeaux, and Helsinki.
