We are seeking candidates for PhD positions starting 2015 at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. Please find an overview of the available projects below, and see the attachment for more information.

(1) Spatial and temporal variations in grounding-line proximal sedimentation in the Anvers Trough (Antarctica)
Supervisors: Cartigny, Hillenbrand(BAS), Smith(BAS), Talling, Larter(BAS), Hogan (BAS), Summer (University of Southampton)

(2) Turbidity current dynamics in the Congo Canyon
Supervisors: Cartigny, Talling, Sumner (University of Southampton), Cooper (Chevron), Hansen (Complex Flow Design AS), Clare (Fugro)

(3) Monterey Canyon – Understanding the tempo of sediment transport into the deep ocean; the most ambitious direct monitoring of submarine flows yet attempted.
Supervisors: Talling, Sumner (University of Southampton), Cartigny and Clare

(4) Morphodynamics of turbidity-current bedforms on the Squamish Delta (British Columbia, Canada)
Supervisors: Cartigny, Talling, Hoyal (ExxonMobil Upstream Research), Sumner, Eggenhuisen (Utrecht University), Hughes Clarke (University of New Brunswick)

(5) Novel use of Chirp sonar technology to image internal dynamics of full-scale turbidity currents.
Supervisors: Vardy, Cartigny, Thompson (University of Southampton), and Hughes-Clarke (University of New Brunswick)

(6) Does rapid loss of soil structure trigger submarine landslides and what are the implications for hydrocarbon structures?
Supervisors: Talling, Vardy, Zervos (Department of Civil Engineering), Clare (Fugro)

(7) 4D Chirp – High resolution imaging of temporal changes in physical properties in the subsurface
Supervisors: Vardy, Bull, Henstock, Dix, Malgorn (Kongsberg)
