Comentaris:There is great interest in the atmospheric transport of mineral dust because of its role in climate through is impact on radiation and clouds. Dust also plays a role in ocean biogeochemistry by providing iron and other micronutirents that are important to ocean primary productivity and, hence, on the global carbon cycle. Here I present an overview of the temporal and spatial distribution of dust over the global ocean but placing the main emphasis on studies over the North Atlantic which is heavily impacted by African dust transport. The University of Miami has a long record of studies in this region beginning in the mid-1960s. In the late 1980s a network of stations was established in the North Atlantic in a program that extended to the late 1990s. These studies, especially those conducted at Izaña Observatory, Tenerife, provide a unique record of the impact of African dust transport over the region and demonstrate the large temporal and spatial variability.
