Experimental petrology is complementary to the observation of natural systems for constraining the complex processes at the origin of rare element pegmatite formation and rare metal enrichment in pegmatitic melts. We will show how experimental products can be linked to natural rocks through dissolution and crystallization experiments of zircon, tantalite and rutile in highly-fluxed pegmatitic melts. In particular, experiments reveal the importance of melt supercooling and element interactions in controlling ore mineral textures and compositions in pegmatitic systems.
