High-pressure experiments are important tools to reveal the properties of matter under extreme conditions. The application of this thermodynamic variable leads to a great reduction of interatomic distances, which intensifies interatomic interactions and allows a better study of material properties than by changing temperature, the other basic thermodynamic parameter. Besides, high-pressure techniques are also extensively used to synthesize compounds in different structural phases in order to change their properties without variation of their chemical stoichiometry. In this talk, several examples of the effect of the pressure by means of synchrotron-based angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction are presented. These examples will offer the possibility to sweep the different kind of phase transitions observed and to promote the use of synchrotron radiation to reveal even slight changes in the compressed matter.
