Biophysics and Bioengineering

Presentation

The Unit of Biophysics and Bioengineering carries out intensive teaching activities aiming to help students identify what physical models and properties are most relevant to understand a variety of biological processes, and to become acquainted with the physical principles underlying the technologies used in clinical diagnostics and current therapeutic approaches. These teaching activities are part of the curricula of different degrees and masters offered in the School of Medicine and Life Sciences and in the School of Physics of the University of Barcelona, although the largest contributions include the degrees of Medicine and of Biomedical Engineering as well as the master of Biomedical Engineering and the master of Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Biomedical Engineering.  In terms of research, the Unit of Biophysics and Bioengineering is largely specialized in applying the principles and methodologies of physics and engineering to the study of a variety of biological systems in normal and diseased conditions. The scope of this multidisciplinary research includes both basic and translational approaches, and is conducted in close collaboration with clinical research groups. Our goal is to improve the diagnostic and treatment of human diseases. Most of our work applies to different length scales, including the molecular, cellular and tissue/organ level. Our main areas of research include mechanobiology, respiratory and cardiovascular biophysics, and biomedical image processing.
