About Enteric Virus Lab

About Us

At the Enteric Virus Laboratory, we are devoted to the study of human enteric viral agents as hepatitis A and E viruses, astrovirus, norovirus, sapovirus, and rotavirus. Our research spans molecular and clinical aspects, focusing on these viruses as food and environmental contaminants, with the objective to reduce their burden on human health. We also study emerging viruses like SARS-CoV-2, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, monkeypox, and arboviruses, using wastewater detection to enhance public health strategies and disease surveillance. Our aim is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology to industry and administrations related to the pharmaceutical sector, food sector, water quality, and public health.

We are members of the Research Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety of the University of Barcelona (INSA-UB), awarded as a research unit of excellence María de Maeztu 2023-2026 (CEX2021-001234-M).

Since 2019, we launched the SAVCA Laboratory (Services for the Analysis of Viruses in the Food Chain and Water Cycle) at the Food and Nutrition Torribera Campus, to offer specialized services related to the virological safety of food.

In 2025, we obtained TECNIO accreditation. The TECNIO seal is granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, through ACCIÓ, to identify and give visibility to technology developers in the R&D&I system of Catalonia who present differential technological capabilities and have the ability to transfer them to strengthen the business sector and make the Catalan innovation ecosystem internationally attractive.

Objectives

The Enteric Virus Laboratory is devoted to research and knowledge transfer activities aiming to reduce the impact of enteric viruses on human health:

  • Studies of molecular virology and virus-host cell interaction to identify mechanisms of pathogenesis and potential antiviral strategies

  • Production of viral antigens and vaccine candidates

  • Development of molecular methods for detection, quantification, genetic characterization, and infectivity assessment of viral contaminants relevant for food and water safety

  • Environmental monitoring of emerging viruses and wastewater-based epidemiology
