Enteric Virus Lab

SAVCA LAB – Service for the Analysis of Viruses in the Food Chain and Water Cycle

  • Qualitative and quantitative molecular detection of hepatitis A virus, Norovirus GI, and Norovirus GII (ISO 15216-2:2019 and ISO 15216-1:2017/Amd 1:2021)
  • Risk assessment using PMA viability RTqPCR assays to estimate genome copies/infection in samples contaminated by hepatitis A virus, Norovirus GI, and Norovirus GII
  • Food matrices: bivalve mollusks (fresh, frozen, cooked), algae, soft fruits, stem and bulb vegetables, or other foods suspected of viral surface contamination
  • Water matrices: bottled water, reclaimed water, industrial water, surface water, wastewater, and others

Contract Research

Collaboration with industry partners to address specific research questions and develop practical solutions.

  • Validation Studies: Conducting validation studies for viral inactivation and disinfection processes applicable to water treatment and the food chain. These studies can be performed at laboratory scale, as pilot studies, or in situ.
  • Virological Safety Analysis: Analyzing virological safety during the manufacturing processes of medicines, cosmetics, and other reagents to ensure that the products are free from viral contamination.
  • Viral Antigen Production, which can be used as reference materials, or in the development of diagnostic tests.
  • Vaccine Development: Conducting studies to develop new vaccine candidates, including preclinical testing.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Performing environmental virology studies to monitor the circulation of emerging viruses in wastewater, which can help in early detection and control of outbreaks.

Scientific Consulting

  • Risk Assessment Reports/Case Studies, to evaluate the potential impact of viral contamination in various settings, such as food production or water supply.

Training and Dissemination

  • Specialized training in virological safety in food and water.

  • Customized courses in the field of molecular and environmental virology.

  • Dissemination activities (speakers and trainers).
