Open Position at the Brainlab: Early Stage Reseacher (FPI contract) in neurocognitive development

The Brainlab is seeking for a highly motivated Early Stage Resarcher (ESR; PhD student) to join our research group and the project entitled The Frequency-Following Response (FFR) in newborns and its role as a potential biomarker for neurocognitive development, (PGC2018-094765-B-I00), financed by the Spanish Ministry of Science.

The positions is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science through the program “Contratos para la Formación de Doctores (old FPI program), call 2019. The selected candidate will be sponsored in his/her application to the program, and ranked first by the PI during the selection process.

This project is part of an ambitious research program addressing the encoding of speech sounds in the newborn’s brain (read more), which is being carried out in collaboration with the Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona Children’s Hospital. The major goal of this program is to established the Frequency-Following Response (FFR; read more) as a potential biomarker of language achievement, reading abilities and neurodevelopmental success in babies born at risk for neurocognitive impairment, with fetal growth restriction or prematurity.

In the present project, we aim at establishing the neurodevelopmental trajectory of the FFR during the first year of life with regard the maturation of the auditory pathway and cortex as evaluated by means of diffusion and volumetric MRI.

The successful candidate will join the Brainlab to carry out his/her PhD thesis under the supervision of the PI of the project. Main duties will be to design, implement and carrying out the FFR recordings and behavioral assessment at birth, 3, 6 and 12 months of age, as well as analyzing the FFR and the MRI data in collaboration with the project team members at the Brainlab and the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital.
