Potential for scientific leadership

Rainfall variability, Mediterranean region, atmospheric circulation patterns, climatic teleconnection indices, stratosphere and global change are the keywords of Lopez-Bustins’ research in the Physical Geography and Earth Sciences. He is a physical geographer, climatologist and member of the Group of Climatology (Generalitat de Catalunya, 2014SGR300) in the University of Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain).

Lopez-Bustins started his scientific career at the University of Barcelona in 2003 as a PhD fellow supported by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (2003-2006). His research has mainly focussed on topics related to rainfall variability over the Iberian Peninsula. He investigated several factors involved in precipitation changes, e.g., atmospheric circulation in the stratosphere-troposphere and solar forcing. In order to develop these topics he made two stays supported by the above mentioned Ministry at the Canary Institute of Astrophysics (Spain) and the Meteorological Institute of the Free University of Berlin (Germany) in 2004 and 2005, respectively. In 2007, Lopez-Bustins was awarded a PhD in Physical Geography by the University of Barcelona.

He subsequently became involved in a project addressing the impacts of climate change on water resources in Mediterranean watersheds at the CREAF (Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications). He worked as technical co-coordinator of the project during the 2008-2009 period. In October 2009, he became Lecturer in the Department of Physical Geography and Regional Geographical Analysis at the University of Barcelona. Since 2013, Lopez-Bustins is also member of the GECCC (Group of Experts on Climate Change in Catalonia).

Scientific achievements

His main achievement involved defining a new teleconnection pattern over the Western Mediterranean for study of pluviometric variability and torrential frequency in eastern Iberia.

His PhD thesis was entitled “The Western Mediterranean Oscillation and Rainfall in the Catalan Countries”. The results were published in four papers in international journals included in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR). The thesis was awarded the PhD Extraordinary prize and the European Doctorate Mention from the Faculty of Geography and History (University of Barcelona).

During the last years he developed the Western Mediterranean Oscillation (WeMO). The WeMO is a regional teleconnection pattern. It is defined in order to account for pluviometric variability in areas of the Iberian Peninsula subjected to a weak influence of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), such as the Catalan Countries (eastern Iberia). The time trends of the WeMO index (WeMOi) show a clear correspondence with the temporal evolution of rainfall in the study area. The spectral analyses also highlight this dependence of rainfall in eastern Iberia on the WeMOi. He observed that the WeMOi at daily time scale constitutes a useful tool for predicting episodes of torrential rainfall in eastern Iberia.
