Abstract

Possible worlds represent certain things as being the case --- thus a world might represent that there talking donkeys, and it might represent you a being different to how you actually are. A foundational *meta*representational question is thus that of *how* a world gets to represent things as being one way or the other. In the talk, I'll focus on the counterpart theoretic account of representation David Lewis defended. In addition to offering an account of how I think counterpart theory is best understood, I'll also clarify the commitments of the theory, defend it from some famous criticisms, and --- time permitting --- explore whether counterpart theory can be developed outside of the context of Lewis's own modal metaphysics.
