Have you seen ringed Bonelli’s eagles or Egyptian vultures?

During the breeding seasons of 2008-2017, the Biology Conservation Group has marked 380 Bonelli’s eagle chicks in Catalonia with the collaboration of the “Cos d’Agents Rurals” (Catalan Wildlife Rangers) of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The marking consisted on ringing the chicks with a conventional metallic ring in one leg, and a red alphanumeric coded band (readable from long distances) in the other leg. The alphanumeric coded band is read vertically, from upwards to downwards. Similarly, during the breeding seasons of 2012-2017, the Biology Conservation Group has also marked 100 Egyptian vulture chicks in Catalonia using the same kind of rings and coded bands.

Up to 2017 and thanks to the resightings by several collaborators, we could gather information on 134 Bonelli’s eagles (35,3 %) and 15 Egyptian vultures (15,0 %) ringed in Catalonia. The resightings of marked individuals is a basic source of information to estimate the survival of these endangered species. For this reason, we ask to all birdwatchers sighting marked Bonelli’s eagles or Egyptian Vultures to fill in the following form.

Thank you very much for your cooperation!
