Based on her book project, which analyzes the shifting configurations of race, class, and nation in post-war British theatre—and proposes a deliberately bounded national analysis grounded in devolved (Nairn 2000; Gardiner 2013) and anticolonial perspectives (Gilroy 2013; Virdee & McGeever 2023)—Gemma Edwards (Leverhulme ECR Fellow, University of Manchester) invites us to a session of reflection and debate around our own research methods, often complex and messy.
With a special focus on the challenges we may encounter when reflecting on our research methodologies, the second part of the seminar will encourage participants to share their current methodological questions and to collectively reflect on how to “think against the grain.”

Schedule:

  • 11.00 h – Welcome and introduction
  • 11.10 h – Presentation: “Cobbling as Historiographic Practice: Towards Remaking the Record of Post-war English Theatre History”
  • 11.50 h – Comfort break
  • 12.00 h – Q&A
  • 12.15 h – Group discussion: how do we work against the grain?
