Have you found an electrocuted bird under an electricity pylon?

Electrocuted Bonelli's eagle found under an electricity pylon.

Electrocution on power lines is a major threat to many bird species across the world, in particular endangered species such birds of prey. In Catalonia, electrocution is the primary cause of death of the Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata), and across the rest of the Iberian Peninsula it affects particularly large numbers of the endangered Iberian Imperial Eagle (Aquila adalberti) and many other ecologically valuable species. For these reasons, evaluation and mitigation of impacts of power lines on birds is one of the main priorities of the Conservation Biology Group.

Electrocution occurs when a bird comes into contact with two wires or when it perches on a conductive pylon (for example, a metal structure) and comes into simultaneous contact with a wire. We know the threat posed by a pylon depends on the electrotechnical design and the natural features around it. In addition, most of the electrocutions take place on few dangerous pylons. Because of this, we ask to all birdwatchers who find an electrocuted bird to fill in the form on this page. Thanks to this information, we will enhance the need to implement corrective measures on areas, power lines and pylons.

Thank you very much for your cooperation!
