We promote the study of interrelations between language and society

Who we are

The Center for Research in Sociolinguistics and Communication of the Universitat de Barcelona was created in 1998 (our story) under the name “University Center for Sociolinguistics and Communication” (CUSC in Catalan, an acronym that has continued to be used until the present). Its objective is to promote the study of the interrelations between language and society, facilitating collaboration between researchers from different departments and in complementary fields of study (research). CUSC’s activities include research, consulting, and development programming.

CUSC publishes two electronic journals: the journal LSC — Llengua, Societat i Comunicació, and the bulletin Apunts de Sociolingüística i Política Lingüística, published monthly. These publications place university research within the reach of greater society.

CUSC was created with the support of the established research groups Grup de Complexitat, Comunicació i Sociolingüística , Grup de Recerca en Adquisició de Llengües, and Grup d’Estudi de la Variació , and was one of the founding members of the Xarxa CRUSCAT . It forms part of the Mercator Network, gives support to the ENROPE Network, and collaborates with the European Language Council.
