IEB invites the submission of papers for presentation at the 8th Workshops on Public Economics and Political Economy
The Barcelona Institute of Economics (IEB) invites the submission of papers for presentation at the 8th Workshops on Public Economics and Political Economy in Barcelona. The Workshop on Economics of Taxation & Social Expenditure will take place from 4th to 5th June and the Workshop on Political Economy, from 6th to 7th June. Both theoretical and empirical papers are welcome. Please note that each paper can only be submitted to one of the two workshops.
The challenges to the welfare state and their potential solutions will focus the attention of the Workshop on Economics of Taxation & Social Expenditure. The scientific committee welcomes papers that evaluate policies that affect the public sector either on the revenue or the expenditure side. In particular, the workshop will look at topics related to behavioral responses to taxation, mobility, the design of tax enforcement, tax harmonization, and social expenditure policies such as pensions, unemployment, and health.
The Workshop on Political Economy will focus on populism, polarization, corruption, political economy of migration, conflict, selection of politicians and the interaction between public finances and political institution. All these are important challenges to the political institutions and public finances of developed and developing countries which have arisen as a result of the recent economic crisis. These challenges have motivated scholars to study both the political determinants and consequences of these recent events.
Dr. Mark Duggan (Stanford University) and Dr. Claus Thustrup Kreiner (University of Copenhagen) will be the keynote speakers at the Workshop on Economics of Taxation & Social Expenditure. On the other hand, Dr. Raymond Fisman (Boston University) and Dr. Rocio Titiunik (University of Michigan) will be the keynote speakers at the Workshop on Political Economy.
