Digital identity promises inclusion and efficiency, while it also raises fears of surveillance and loss of autonomy. From Europe’s eIDAS to blockchain-based IDs, experts debate whether digital identity will empower individuals or become a new instrument of social control, perpetuating or deepening the already existing unfair inequalities.
