Speakers

Henry Giroux
McMaster University

One of the founders of critical pedagogy in the United States and one of Canada’s most widely known academics, he is Professor of English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. He has been listed among the fifty most influential present-day thinkers in the domain of education and is also the main translator into English of the works of Paulo Freire, with whom he has co-edited numerous publications on critical pedagogy. Always upholding radical democracy, Giroux sees pedagogy as an essential vehicle for constricting a critical citizenry.

Notable among his widely translated works are Pedagogía crítica, estudios culturales y democracia radical, Cultura, política y práctica educativa, and Teachers as Intellectuals: Toward a Critical Pedagogy of Learning.

Book

The idea of organising IRED'19 arises from the reflections of this publication.

Education 2018-2020. Challenges, trends and commitments

In the book promoted by IRE-UB, which has counted on the participation of the Institute of Research and Educational Innovation of the University of the Balearic Islands, various authors reflect on the challenges and trends in education, while at the same time pointing to their own commitments on the issues addressed.

Through brief articles, aspects such as the characteristics and identity of university education are discussed, as well as their implications for the development of society; the new trends in educational research and methodologies; the orientation acquired by teacher training; the training in specific education disciplines; and the values in education with respect to social responsibility.
