Postdoctoral contracts for the European project BADEMS

The research project funded by the European Research Council, The Cultural History of the Black African Diaspora in Early Modern Spain (BADEMS), directed by Diana Berruezo-Sánchez (ADHUC-Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) is inviting applications for postdoctoral contracts.

  • Three-year postdoctoral research fellowship on Early Modern Iberian History with an interest in Cultural Minorities with effect from 15 June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.  The successful candidate will implement a line of research focused on the role of Afro-Hispanic confraternities as cultural and religious hubs in early modern Spain, and is expected to be an important part of the implementation and dissemination of the project carrying out independent research, attending and organizing conferences, and producing research outputs. Candidates should have research experience working on early modern Spain; a PhD in early modern History or relevant fields; native or near-native fluency in written and spoken English and Spanish; ability and commitment to work both independently and collaborative; motivation to pursue a career in research. Salary starts at 34.812,12 € p.a. and can be negotiated based on the candidate’s CV and expertise. More informationhttps://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/jobs/179776 

 

  • Two-year positions to conduct archival work in the cities of Madrid, Seville, Cádiz, Granada, and Badajoz. Successful candidates will have the engaging and skillful task of identifying Black cultural agents —Black musicians, actors, storytellers, and dancers— in sixteenth and seventeenth-century records mostly in Spanish and occasionally in Portuguese. They will examine a wide range of manuscript and print documents and are expected to conduct archival work in situ. Each researcher will be based in and work in the archives of one of the following cities: Madrid, Seville, Granada, Cádiz, and Badajoz. Candidates, therefore, are expected to be living, or willing to move at their own expenses, at a commuting distance from the archives of Seville, Madrid, Cádiz, Granada, and Badajoz. Some travelling can be expected to an archive in a commute distance and such expenses will be covered by the project. Successful candidates will be postdoctoral researchers with experience in archival work and familiar with sixteenth and seventeenth-century records in Spanish. Master’s and PhD students with broad experience in archival work who envisage to finish their doctorate in the short and mid-term are encouraged to apply and will be considered.
