The concept of occupational risk implies the possibility that a person may suffer a certain amount of harm derived from the work they do. In the case of biological risk, it would imply the possibility of suffering harm as a result of exposure or contact with biological agents during the performance of the work activity. However, Biosafety broadens this concept of biological risk to include possible damage not only to people but also to other living beings and the environment.

The objective of the biological risk assessment is to obtain the necessary information to make an appropriate decision on the need to adopt preventive measures and also on the type of measures to be implemented. From this assessment is when the principles of containment, technologies and procedures will be specifically determined in order to prevent unintentional exposure to biological agents and toxins or their accidental release (UNE-CWA 15793:2013), and to achieve optimal risk management.
