Who we are?

In an event held in the Aula Magna of the University of Barcelona in November 2003, the Water Observatory was publicly presented to society, the corporate sector and the government.

The University of Barcelona's governing bodies had promoted the establishment of the Water Observatory to address all water-related issues, from any discipline and any of the UB's areas of knowledge, regardless of the academic situation of the teaching staff who could join the organization and of whether or not they were members or a research group.

The main aim of the Water Observatory was to give fresh impetus to science at the University of Barcelona and thus to optimize all of its scientific and research capacity in one field and subject matter: the analysis, assessment and research of water.

Before its formal presentation, the Water Observatory had already incorporated many members of the UB either through its research groups or individually. At that time, the Observatory had 18 research groups and over 120 researchers.

Once the regulations on University of Barcelona research institutes had been approved, the UB governing bodies charged the Water Observatory Management with the task of transforming the organization into an institute, as described in the new regulation. This task was even more relevant as the UB's Strategic Plan stated that one of the University's priorities was to set up a Water Research Institute, in line with the new regulations. This entity would promote and carry out interdisciplinary and specialized research activities in various scientific and technological fields, and would be capable of providing scientific and technological advice in the field of water.
