AGAUR Awards Grant to UB School of Economics for Climate Change Research
The UB School of Economics’ research group, Riskcenter-IREA, has secured funding from the Agency for Management of University and Research Grants (AGAUR) for the project “Climate Change: Risk Management and Insurance for a Sustainable Economy,” as part of the call “Funding for research projects for mitigation and adaptation to climate change 2023.”
The project, led by our researcher Helena Chuliá, aims to advance scientific understanding of the main financial risks faced by firms and governments during the European transition to more resilient societies in response to climate change. This effort will guide the optimal design of insurance contracts, addressing market failures experienced by entities in this transitional phase.
With the broader goal of identifying and estimating natural and financial risks associated with climate change, the team aims to provide crucial insights for evidence-based policies. This includes addressing market failures experienced by firms and governments during the transition to more resilient societies.
The anticipated impact of this research extends to citizens, the insurance industry, firms in crucial sectors, policymakers, and market participants. By advancing scientific understanding, the project seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and resilient future.
This initiative aligns seamlessly with Catalonia’s commitment to renewable energy sources and preparedness for climate change, reinforcing its significance in shaping the region’s sustainability goals.
The research team is composed of University of Barcelona researchers, including Ramon Alemany, Manuela Alcañiz, Merche Ayuso, Germà Bel, Lluís Bermúdez, Catalina Bolancé, Ana Maria Gil, Marta Gómez, Montserrat Guillén, David Moriña, Luis Ortiz, Ana María Pérez, Miguel Santolino, Salvador Torra. Additionally, Jorge M. Uribe and Simón Sosvilla are part of the team.
