Since September 2023, the International Seminar on Social Theory at UB has been an academic space for critical debate on the transformations of capitalism and their implications in Latin America and the Global South. The Seminar promotes dialogue among researchers and students around key questions: What does progress mean in contemporary capitalist societies? How are benefits and costs distributed? What crises and inequalities does it generate?
With a plural approach and without adhering to any specific school of thought, the Seminar addresses topics such as peripheral modernities, socio-ecological crises, post-authoritarian democracies, stratification and inequality, feminist perspectives, and postcolonial social theory. Monthly sessions on Zoom combine one-hour lectures with open discussion and allow participation from international speakers and audiences. All presentations are available on the Seminar’s YouTube channel.
The Seminar is open to the entire academic community, with special attention to students of sociology, philosophy, political science, history, and economics. Its trajectory will culminate in 2026 with the publication of a book compiling the Seminar’s most outstanding papers.
