Report on the event
Even though scientific activity focused on the multiple facets of the water does not pause among members and research groups of the Water Research Institute (IdRA), once a year, near the date of the World Water Day (22nd March), the IdRA proposes a deliberate and unhurried reflection on some current aspect of the liquid element, by inviting a special guest lecture. On 14th March 2016, Cristina Narbona, PhD in Economics, gave a conference entitled "Cambio climático y política del agua”, held at the Faculty of Geography and History at the University of Barcelona. The former Minister of Environment (2004-2008) - during whose office performance repealed the National Hydrological Plan and with that, revoked the most controversial and expensive work, the transfer of the Ebro - began the lecture providing a comprehensive ethical view on access to water. She reminded us that there are still 663 million people in the world without access to safe drinking water and many millions more without basic sanitation. Moreover, and in light of the 5th IPCC, climate change is already visible also in precipitation, with declines in areas with poor rainfalls and increased rainfall in rainy areas. From the global scale she went down to regional and local scale putting some examples of poor water management in Spain and justifying desalination. She reminded us specially the high water footprint of certain foods, which requiries a food transition, in addition to the required energy transition. Finished the lecture of the speaker, the presents, about one hundred, asked numerous questions.
