Coinciding with the start of the academic year, the new edition of ‘UB in figures‘ arrives, featuring the most significant data from the 2022-2023 academic year. It presents, in a comprehensible and engaging manner, the key figures of the University of Barcelona and its academic activities, as well as the evolution of certain variables over recent years. This year, the document includes a new section on entrepreneurship, highlighting projects incubated in StartUB!, emerging companies (start-ups) created, and individuals trained in innovation and entrepreneurship.

The document highlights the extensive range of educational programs offered by the University of Barcelona, including 73 bachelor’s degrees, 16 concurrent study pathways, 173 master’s programs, and 47 doctoral programs. In total, there are over 60,000 students: 41,095 undergraduates, 5,523 master’s students, and 10,644 postgraduates, in addition to 4,990 researchers in training. A noteworthy development this year is the establishment of the Faculty of Nursing, as well as data from the latest employment insertion study conducted by the Agency for the Quality of the University System in Catalonia (AQU), upon completing their studies at UB, 89.6% of graduates find employment within a year, a figure that rises to 92.0% for master’s degree holders.

In the research section, ‘UB in figures’ illustrates the growing trend in the number of scientific publications by UB researchers in indexed journals, reaching 7,599, as well as the existence of 1,111 active research projects. It also highlights a significant increase in funding for research and transfer: €232 million in 2022 compared to €192 million in the previous year. Additionally, it notes that last year, through the Bosch i Gimpera Foundation (FBG) – its technology and knowledge transfer office – 737 contracts for knowledge transfer were managed, and 87 patents were applied for. Another section provides information about personnel, indicating that in 2023, there were 6,328 members of the teaching and research staff (48.8% women), and 2,370 members of the administrative and service staff (63.9% women).

In the economic chapter, the budget of €485 million is broken down by categories. Regarding services, it mentions that the libraries of the CRAI hold a collection of 1,731,506 printed monographs and journals. Also relevant is the number of direct beneficiaries of actions by the UB Solidarity Foundation (9,384) and members of Alumni UB (8,070).

‘UB in figures’ serves as a reference document for both governing bodies and the entire university community. It also serves as a presentation card for the University in comparison to other institutions, both nationally and internationally, and for society as a whole. Prepared by the Technical Office of the Rector’s Office and published by Ediciones UB, this year 830 copies in Catalan, 430 in Spanish, and 1,230 in English have been printed. The Catalan version can now be consulted online, and the Spanish and English versions will be available soon.
