Water, along with the abundance of oxygen in the atmosphere and the existence of life, is the feature that distinguishes Earth from other planets in the solar system. While the blue of the oceans and white of the clouds make the presence of water evident on the planet we inhabit, even from space, in recent decades, there has been a great deal of interest in searching for water on other planets.
The extraordinary abundance of water, although very unevenly distributed, gives rise to geophysical processes and varied landscapes, as well as generating water heritage values and hydraulic elements of great interest and utility. This specifically geographical vision of water on the planet provides an integrating and explanatory knowledge at a global, continental, regional, county-wide, and local scale.
The University of Barcelona Institute for water Research 2017 Symposium will address some of the issues surrounding water in three sessions with the following areas of study: the coastline, erosion, and landscape and heritage. Each session will consist of two presentations, in tandem, by one researcher from outside the Barcelona area and another from the city or its vicinity, at least one of which will be a geographer. The presentations will be moderated by three members of IdRA and coordinated by Javier Martín-Vide.
