Conferència «The Oceans and Climate»

L’Institut de l’Aigua organitzarà un acte en el qual s’impartirà la conferència «The Oceans and Climate» presentada pel doctor Alexander Polonsky.

Aquest acte s’impartirà en el marc del Màster Oficial «Aigua. Anàlisi Interdisciplinari i Gestió Sostenible», encara que es destinarà no només a alumnes, sinó també a professors i altres professionals relacionats amb la matèria.

Els continguts que tractarà el doctor Polonsky en les seves intervencions són els següents:

The role of the oceans in the climate system.
The interannual-to-multi-decadal variability of hydro-meteorological characteristics, associated with the large-scale processes in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system.

The role of the oceans in the climate system variability will be demonstrated in four directions:

1. Oceans have got much more heat capacity (than the atmosphere). As a results they reduce the climatic contrasts and amplitude of seasonal variations of meteorological fields.

2. Oceans are the principal source of atmospheric moisture and sink for greenhouse gases. So, they play the crucial role for the cloudiness formation and radiation balance of climate system.

3. Oceans account for more than 50% of meridional heat transport in the low-latitude coupled ocean-atmosphere system. So, they reduce the Pole-minus-Equator temperature contrasts and severity of the climate. 

4. Oceans dictate to the climate system inherent oscillations due to typical time scale of baroclinic adjustment of the oceanic gyres and global thermohaline circulation.
